A Pack of Sweets

A Pack of Sweets
A human detail in the field
Sergeyich finds Red Poppy sweets in the dead soldier’s backpack, along with a small gold earring. The ordinary cargo complicates the distant image of a uniformed casualty.
The journey imagined
He realizes that the man had been moving toward the trees and may have been carrying the sweets to someone. With no papers or phone, the soldier remains unidentified and unreachable.
Children Waiting for Santa

Children Waiting for Santa
A promise remembered
Three children say that an armed young man with an earring promised them sweets at New Year. Sergeyich recognizes the description and realizes the dead soldier was on his way to them.
A promise transferred
He tells the children their Santa is ill and gives the sweets to their mother. The lie is gentle, allowing the children to receive the gift without learning the full violence behind it.
The Backpack Returned

The Backpack Returned
A second act of giving
After delivering the sweets, Sergeyich receives food from the children’s mother, including a jar of lard. The kindness answers his own gift without making it a formal exchange.
A burden set down
He returns to his village with the backpack empty and his conscience calmer. The dead man’s intended generosity has been completed by someone who never knew his name.
